The mass exodus is coming. Some will leave. Others will vamoose. A select few will partake in the proverbial act of "peacing out". Their reasons will vary. However, they will all officially be spring breakers.

Whether they are setting out on a pilgrimage that will lead them to surf and sand, or simply fleeing from debris falling from the library roof, they will all have one thing in common; ceasing to be on university property.

Undergraduates have often wondered how spring break came to be. Was the tradition handed down from the gods at the dawn of time, or did a weary twelfth century teacher get frustrated and simply tell his pupils not to come back for a week?

Perhaps spring break should be viewed like a magic trick. The less we know about it, the more fun it is. Besides, the mystery of the origin allows the individual to attach their own meaning to the week long layoff.

For example, many male students are looking forward to the opportunity to go home and finally see some women who are not dressed in the stereotypical college girl outfit, which is comprised (day in and day out) of the following: hair in a messy bun, black North Face jacket, leggings (color may vary), and Ugg boots. Frostburg ladies seem to be looking forward to attending parties that do not feature drunken frat guys vying for phone numbers and a better spot in the line for the keg.

Junior Jack Ogle will be heading out to Killington, Vermont for some hard core snowboarding. Darlene Teeves, an aspiring artist herself, will be going to several art museums to gain a better understanding of her craft. Transfer student Dane Meserve is planning on hosting a bon fire for his friends over spring break which, yes ladies, will be frat boy free. In a move that can only be described as boring, yet responsible, Lisa Andrews plans to spend her spring break working (possibly to earn money for a new pair of Ugg boots).

No matter what your plans for spring break are, there are three key things that you must keep in mind to enhance your spring break experience. First, have fun! You have a week off from school! Sleep in, eat decent meals, and make your mother do all that laundry that has been amassing in the corner of your room for the last two months. Second, be safe. There is no need to go overboard and hurt yourself or someone else. Finally, remember that you are still a college student. Therefore, it would probably be a good idea to crack a book once or twice.
