Virtually every student at Frostburg has been touched by the intimate TV coverage of Haiti earthquake victims. But for three FSU students, it was time to do more than just watch their tragic situations through a TV screen.

After viewing countless news stories about those victimized by the earthquake,

Three FSU Seniors, Mhabhushah Koffa, Theo Gardiner, and Terryl Monroe-decided to take action. "The encouragement came from seeing all these people through this disaster, losing everything they own. At the end of the day, seeing them smile and sing while clutching on to their bibles...Letting us know they aren't afraid," Koffa said.

Koffa, along with Terryl Monroe and Theo Gardiner, decided to organize a benefit to raise money for these hundreds of thousands of victims. Their mutual interest in sports as well as marketing led them to contact Frostburg State Athletic Director Troy A. Dell. With his help and support, the students planned an event called "Hoops for Haiti" in which the student body and community members could participate.

"Once we got the idea, we scheduled a meeting with the athletic director, and he supported us 100 percent," Monroe said. "Then we started to contact the different organizations around campus in order to support the event and market it," he added. Many groups were asked to support "Hoops for Haiti," from the Student Government Association (SGA) to various fraternities.

Monroe, Koffa, Gardiner, and Dell worked together diligently on the "Hoops for Haiti" event, planning details of the game and ways to raise money. They decided to hold the event on Saturday, February 6 from 1-5 p.m. in the Cordts PE Center at Frostburg. The event will featured both a men's and women's basketball game versus D'Youville College, which is located in Buffalo, New York. It is officially a "white out" event, meaning that guests are asked to wear white to show their support for Haiti victims. T-shirts were sold on Tuesday, February 2 at Tawes Hall from 12-3 p.m. and 4-6 p.m at a cost of $7 each. Shirts will also be sold at the game on Saturday. All profits from the shirts will go directly to the American Red Cross for Haiti Relief Efforts.

Monroe is excited to see what kind of turnout the event will have. "We would love for the entire student body to come out and support the cause, along with the locals here in Frostburg," he said. "Our goal is to raise $5,000 to send to Haiti, which is only a small portion of the money needed there."

Students and community members are sure to have a good time at the event on Saturday. A DJ will treat the audience to some music, and there will be mini-games for fans to play at half-time. The women's game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m., while the men's will tip off at 3 p.m. A donation table will be set up, and all collections will go to the Red Cross for Haiti Relief Efforts.

Koffa relayed his group's sentiments regarding the countless people suffering in Haiti: "These people are very strong willed and are prepared to fight this battle. I just wanted to do my part to help them along this fight."
