In a matter of weeks, finals, homework, and late night studying will be over, and students will be heading home to spend the holidays with families and friends. That means Christmas is almost here and there are gifts to be bought. What are students planning on buying for parents, significant others, or even best friends? Does price really matter when students are broke and in college?

"I'm giving all my friends something hand-made and I make cards for my parents or buy something they'd use," said freshman Maria Esguerra.

James Llewellyn, another freshman at Frostburg, seems to have the same idea as Maria. "I'm going to make origami for everybody in my dorm. My family buys gag gifts for each other; it really makes the holidays a lot of fun."

Making hand-made gifts is not only cheap but also shows the giver put a lot of thought into their gifts, instead of buying them just based on the price tag.

Another student said, "I don't know what I'm doing this year yet, but one year I put together a scrapbook for my boyfriend with pictures of him, and then pictures of him with me and/or other people. It was a lot of fun, pretty inexpensive, and a lot more personal and meaningful than something I could have taken off a shelf in a store."

For those students who are not so craft-savvy, there are definitely gifts that can be found for a small price.

According to Carol Hiker's article, "Cool Christmas Gifts under $25 - 10 Cheap (and cool) present/gift ideas for Christmas," one really cheap and cool idea is the Make Your Own Opoly Board Game.

What's better for a friend or significant other who loves board games than to give them one they can make themselves? Amazon has this cheap gift for only $20.97. Everything is in the box and the receiver can customize the game to whatever they want. They can make it by hand or by using the CD-ROM and printing all the labels out and piecing it together. Either way, it will be fun to make and play afterward without breaking the bank.
