December has arrived and another year in music is coming to an end. What will be remembered from 2009? Could it be the revival of bands you thought you had heard the last of? Will the loss of a hero sum up this past year? Lets not forget the new artists breaking through. All of these events are leaving everyone curious as to what is in store for 2010.
Unless you have been exiled for the past 12 months it comes to no surprise that women ruled the charts in 2009. Kicking the year off, Beyonce released her single "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)" causing the choreography-driven video to become a dance craze on YouTube.
Early in the year Lady Gaga's debut single "Just Dance" hit number one on the Billboard charts. Kelly Clarkson also broke a record for biggest chart jump from 97 to number one with "My Life Would Suck Without You" in the first week of release.
The 51st Grammy Awards gave Lil Wayne four awards and Coldplay three. However Alison Krauss and Robert Plant won five Grammys for the album Raising sand. Around this time news breaks out that hip hop star Chris Brown had been abusing pop diva Rihanna. This soon became a pop culture reference that is sure to stay.
Taylor Swift had an eventful year experiencing huge success with her album "Fearless." Taking awards left and right was becoming normal until Kanye West made MTV's VMAs eventful by storming the stage and taking the microphone to give a speech of his own proving yet again his lack of self control.
Brittany Spears makes a comeback in 2009 with her first world tour in five years, and first tour since her public breakdown. The tour called "The Circus Staring: Brittany Spears." Rapper T.I. was sentenced to one year and one day in prison for federal weapon charges.
Brittany was not the only artist to hit the scene again. Blink 182, Creed, The Cranberries, Limp Bizkit, Alice in Chains, Dave Matthews Band, Eminem, Greenday, Kiss, Third Eye Blind, and U2 are just a few of the artists that made their way back in the music industry whether through touring or new albums. Mariah Carey also released her twelfth album.
