Goodbye, sunny warm days and hello, frigid winter nights! With fall sports dwindling down, winter sports are making their presence known with preseason practices, scrimmages and polls.
Many winter sport teams have been getting a head start with morning or afternoon workouts or pickup games arranged by captains on the team and other teammates. With all the hard work put in before the actual season every team is anticipating their season being successful and an improvement from the last.
Women' s swimming head coach Kaymee Kelly has already made her season resolutions about both men's and women's swim team which is to make a competitive run and give the Alleghany Mountain Collegiate Conference Championships a run for their money. Last year Women's swim team, placed second behind their rivalry Penn State Behrend, while the Men's placed third.
Recently the Bobcats have opened up their season in the Clarion Fall Classic this past weekend. Although this did not count towards their Conference, like all preseason openers this allowed the team to see how each individual swimmer placed and what they need to improve. The Bobcat swim team also has a chance to show their first opponent, Penn State Altoona on October 31 who they should really fear this season.
Along with the swim team the Men's and Women's Basketball team has officially started practice as well. The poll on the Women's basketball team has them ranked sixth out of eleven teams they are up against in the Alleghany Mountain Collegiate Conference.
Last season they finished second after they were beaten in the AMCC semi-finals against La Roche by two points, but with a new assistant coach and five returning players they hope to win the championship and place in the NCCA tournament as well. Although they have not played against anyone yet, they are preparing to face Stevenson on November 15 at home.
The Men's Basketball team has the same motives as far as where they want to place and how far they want to go in their conference, which is to the championship as well. They have been placed fourth in their conference, falling short to Medaille, Penn State Behrend and Pitt-Bradford and just recently had their first opening scrimmage which was successful against Montgomery Community College in Rockville, Md.
The winter sport teams are gearing up for their season conference openers, with the one goal on all of their minds and in common which is to go to the Championship and make a name for themselves in NCCA tournaments. With hard work in the preseason scrimmages and practices all teams should be well prepared for what other teams are going to bring to the table.
