The Michael Jackson Tribute event began with a bang at 7:30 pm on Wednesday night October 14, 2009 brought together by the organization, Eclectic II. Mourned by music lovers of pop or just of his music, Michael Jackson died this summer on June 25, 2009 shocking people not only nationwide, but worldwide.
Rescheduled at the last minute to be presented on the second floor of the Lane Center, Frostburg student entertainers of the evening gathered that night to pay homage to the late and great King of Pop. Frostburg students also came to support those who were performing that consisted of everything from dancers to rappers to sweet and short recited poetry.
The beginning of the tribute started off with a pictorial slide show with commentary from Curtis Eaddy. The slideshows consisted of Michael Jackson's career, starting from his family group, the Jackson 5 at the age of 6. It went on to show pictures from the many shows he performed with his brothers to Michael standing out as a single artist with his first hit single "Don't stop till you get enough," coming from his Off the Wall album.
The slideshow continued with pictures of his successful album, remarkable charity involvement that he invested over 250 million dollars to and eventually ended in the untimely death that took place this past summer. As one of the hosts for that night, Curtis Eaddy began to get the crowd ready; he also silenced the audience with a short poem of Michael Jackson life and legacy.
After he was finished, the first performer took the stage with a rap dedicated to Michael about Michael's triumphant and tribulations brought upon him by the world. He gave thanks to this legend and rapped about the need for all of us to ignore tribulations that are sometimes brought upon us by the world as well.
Another performer that mesmerized everyone with her lyrical content and great beats was Courtney Lancaster. When asked about how she felt the show went, she said, "As an artist which performed in the show, I felt it was good showcase to get an audience. Although I felt we needed to be a bit more organized, we are, as an organization getting better and we are reaching people through music, dance and that's our main goal, to share our craft."
The following performers all took the same paths in honoring Michael Jackson in various styles. Hip Hop groups expressed their love for Michael through their lyrics while Hip Hop Dancers and Ballet Dancers expressed their passion for Michael Jackson's mind-blowing craftsmanship through fluid and hardcore dance moves.
The talent of these performers shocked many of their friends and supporters with never hearing or even knowing they had this gift.
Wednesday night was not only a night for people to take a little break from studying for midterms, but also pay their respects and condolences to Michael Jackson.
Lancaster also commented, "Overall I think the show was a success....we honored a legend that has shaped us and left an imprint on me personally."
Although the King of Pop is gone physically, the performers of the night lifted his spirit and gave honor to a man that many generations have grown up with.
