Issue date: 9/9/09 Section: News
Whether you are a returning student or a newly admitted freshman, undergraduate or graduate student, transfer student from another college or first time FSU student-I want to welcome you to Frostburg State University. It is truly great having you join us at Frostburg State and I hope you look forward to an exciting and productive year. You will find that the faculty and staff at Frostburg State University are here to help and support you. At the same time, they have very high expectations about your maturity and ability to manage life in college. It is critically important you always remember that your full time job is to be a student-to study and do well in all of your courses and to involve yourself in co-curricular activities that support you as a person and as a student. If you follow this simple formula you will find your college years to be the best years of your life. It will be a time of forming connections to people that you will most likely never experience again in an environment that you can never hope to recreate once you graduate and leave Frostburg.
Let me make you aware of a few things you will see on campus that are new and different. First of all, you will notice that there is excavation outside the Lane Center that will be the first phase of the construction and renovation of our Student Center. Once complete, the new Lane Center will have a two-story addition that will include expanded student office space, expanded lounges and social gathering areas and a Fitness Center and expanded University Bookstore. The building will close in December 2009 and re-open in approximately 1 year. This will require all faculty, staff and students to be patient and creative as we modify space in other buildings for use. These include Tawes Hall and the Lyric Building on Main Street that will become an important venue for events.
You will also notice that we have renovated the Fitness Center in the Physical Education Center. The new facility has many new features including new aerobic equipment and new free weights for use. You will also notice that the facility is being supervised by a full time Strength and Conditioning coordinator as well as a team of Graduate Students who will oversee the maintenance of the facility and ensure that people are using all equipment appropriately. It will become everyone's responsibility to maintain this new facility and I hope you will assist us and enjoy using it.
