So far this year the group has played 80 shows, including a show in South Africa where they opened for Fat Joe and Akon. Along with other universities and colleges, the band has also done corporate events, as well as bar mitzvahs for, as Wil B put it, "very wealthy little boys and girls." Ultimately, the decision to play in Frostburg was decided by their management company. UPC decided to bring Black Violin to the school because they thought they were really different and UPC wants to keep their events culturally diverse.
Unfortunately, the crowd turnout was modest at best. The whole ARMAH was open for people, but it was mostly just a cluster of people in the front. "Before the actual event we had maybe 16 tickets sold and most of them were door tickets. I guess that's around what we expected which is why we used the ARMAH," Francesca Pehr, a UPC member, explained. Francesca also noted that Black Violin was very easy to work with. "They got there right before the show and they carried all of their stuff in and set every thing up." The band also signed CDs, T-Shirts, as well as other merchandise that was brought up to them. "Third Eye Blind didn't really want to have anything to do with anyone after the show," she added.
Francesca said that UPC is going to do their best to bring more artists like Black Violin to FSU. If you are interested in learning more about Black Violin, you can go to their official site (www.blackviolin.net) or see them on MySpace at www.myspace.com/dknex.
