The Bottom Line

Chasing the Tri-Force

Issue date: 12/6/06 Section: The AT Wire
One person who commented on Cole's article criticized his summary of the Wii as being a GameCube with motion-sensor controls. He said that you can say the same thing about the Playstation 3 since it's basically a beefed-up Playstation 2 with a standard PS2 controller with a motion sensor.

Since a big part of this debate has to do with the balance between gameplay and graphics, it is important to remember that the door swings both ways. Cole claims that Wii supporters scream "gameplay" at the first sign of criticism quicker than the mass media screams "First Amendment" when faced with legal action. On the other hand, what innovative gameplay can we really expect from the PS3 and Xbox 360? If the Wii focuses too much on gameplay by sacrificing graphic elements, then the PS3 obviously appears to focus too much on the graphic elements by sacrificing gameplay. Of course, all of this depends upon the game that is being played.

I could boil down the PS3 and Xbox 360 to nothing more than overpriced and flashy computers. I could tell you that anyone who buys a next generation console for more than $300 is a fool. In the end, however, I'd rather let the market speak for itself. And, while the Wii and its games get flak for being unbalanced, all I can do is laugh and exclaim, "Oh 'noes', I can't read the sign!"
