Gaming Burns Bright as the Year Fizzles

It is my sincerest hope that no gamer who has read my column has felt alienated. Sometimes when people pitch me ideas, they tend to say things like, "Oh it would be awesome if you reviewed…" or "Dude, you should totally preview..." The only problem with doing reviews and previews in my column is that it narrows my topic too much. Gamers come in all shapes, sizes, power levels, glasses prescriptions… you get the idea. It is difficult to address them all at once with a topic because of the diverse tastes; therefore I tend to write about topics that are more universal in the gaming world.

However, this time I plan on taking a brief and closer look at some individual games from different genres and on different platforms. Don't expect too much detail from me in this article; I'm only level thirty in miracle-working.

Quarters three and four looks promising for game developers and gamers this year. After the usual summer drought, gamers can look forward to a plentiful feast of sword-slashing, gun-blazing, role-playing mayhem. Let's just take a quick look at what I think are going to be the biggest titles due to be released by the end of 2006!

First up we have Final Fantasy XII for the Playstation 2. Yes, I know, it's not going to be a launch title for the Playstation 3, but this is Final Fantasy people. Since Square Enix's massively-multiplayer online (MMO) debut with Final Fantasy XI, gamers have been craving that tradition single-player gameplay for a while now. Not even Dirge of Cerebus: Final Fantasy VII, a spin-off of Final Fantasy VII in which you play as Vincent Valentine could do much more than disappoint. Square Enix tried something different with the Final Fantasy series with Dirge of Cerebus by making it a third-person action game. Generally, reviews of the game were poor; GameSpot gave it a measly six out of ten. That is beside the point though because gamers loyal to Final Fantasy are still unwavering. Expect Final Fantasy XII to do well even if it does nothing more than bring back the traditional feel of the games we have come to know and love. Final Fantasy XII is scheduled for release on October 31, 2006.
