Gaming Burns Bright as the Year Fizzles

Last but not least, the FPS genre has some decent titles to be released before Christmas, but I only have room to mention one: Dark Messiah of Might and Magic. The Might and Magic series has been overdue for an awesome game and it looks as if Ubisoft is going to deliver.

Built upon the acclaimed Source engine developed by Valve, Dark Messiah will take advantage of all the visual capabilities of today's best hardware. Yes, that isn't what makes Dark Messiah such an anticipated game. Ubisoft is bringing us a first-person shooter action game that utilizes all the great weaponry of a fantasy/medieval period: swords, bows, daggers, staffs, magic, etc. With a wide variety of skills and special attack combos, Dark Messiah gives the player a new understanding of action. I've managed to play both the single-player demo and the multiplayer open beta and believe me when I say you will have to look hard to find something to be disappointed about.

Understand that while Dark Messiah has elements of more traditional RPGs, it definitely sets itself apart. There is no immersive free-roaming world to explore here like in Oblivion or the yet-to-be-released Gothic 3, but that isn't what Ubisoft is shooting at. Dark Messiah focuses primarily on combat, player-environment interaction, and visuals. The only downside to Dark Messiah is its hefty PC system requirements, which may leave many people searching for new hardware. Watch for Dark Messiah to be released on October 24, 2006.

It's time to start getting excited about the rest of 2006. While there have been several anticipated titles that have had their release dates pushed backward (Huxley and Spore) there is no reason to be discouraged. The only thing gamers, as a culture, have to fear is the coming of Halo 3; at which point in time the heavens will fall and the depths of hell will burst forth and all respectable gamers around the world "will be destroyed in every way it is possible to be destroyed-and even in some which are essentially impossible."
