Next up is World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade for the PC. I'm ashamed to admit it but there is no getting around it; World of Warcraft is still maintaining its choke hold on the MMO genre. Sadly, it would appear that Blizzard Entertainment plans to tighten its grip with the release of its best-selling game's expansion pack. With two new confirmed races, an entire new area being added to the world, and a limitless amount of items and extra goodies, Blizzard intends to improve upon its already impressive game. Gamers who have been ensnared by World of Warcraft are going to pick this expansion pack up the first day, if they don't already have the thing pre-ordered by now. There isn't much else to say about this one. People are crazy about World of Warcraft so expect long lines at the grocery store until The Burning Crusade is released sometime in November.
Game publisher THQ and game developer Relic have been teaming up and keeping busy this year. The real-time strategy (RTS) genre, until recently, hasn't seen a truly decent game since Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War was released. Well, the duo that brought you Dawn of War is back. This time they have brought with them a truly great game. Company of Heroes, a real-time strategy set during the World War II era. I understand that World War II games are more common than college students on Ramen Noodle diets, but don't rule this on out just yet.
Company of Heroes is a unique game because it's designed around Relic's conquest-style gameplay. No more mining of minerals and vespene gas; leave your "show me the money" codes locked away somewhere for safe keeping. With improved physics and graphics, gamers can experience realistic detail never before seen in a real-time strategy. The camera has the ability to zoom so close to the action that it almost feels like you're playing a first-person shooter (FPS). Not to mention the animations and artificial intelligence are near flawless. Needless to say, I picked up my copy the first day it was released. Get the action and feel of the original Dawn of War with a few enhancements, a historical setting, and whole lot of Nazi ass-kicking action.
