As a bit of an Internet junkie, I tend to get most of my video game news from websites. One day over the summer, I was sitting in an orthodontist's waiting room, waiting for my little brother's appointment to be over. Doctor's offices are notorious for having a very poor selection of reading material. To my surprise, this particular orthodontist had a subscription to PC Gamer, one of the most read video game magazines in the United States.
After quickly scanning the pages for anything other than Madden 07' reviews and Halo 3 developer interviews I finally found an article worth reading. The title read, "Starcraft: Reborn."
Starcraft is a legendary game that was released in 1997 by Blizzard Entertainment; a game software company who is also responsible for other hits such as Diablo II and World of Warcraft, the reason why many parent's children become introverts.
It has been a while since Starcraft was released. Blizzard has created a sequel and expansion pack for Diablo, a sequel, third installment, and an expansion pack for Warcraft, and even had time to create an entire MMO, which has an expansion pack due to be released soon. So, for many Starcraft fans, the question still remains, "Will Blizzard ever reopen the dusty vault and have another go at this long forgotten storyline?" Many gamers hope so, yet the realists of the group believe otherwise. With WoW being such a huge source of revenue for the company, Blizzard doesn't really need to make a sequel to one of their best-selling RTS games of all-time. It is that very logic that brings me back to the present: Starcraft: Project Revolution.
Project Revolution is a third-party modification for Warcraft III: Frozen Throne, the latest installment of the Warcraft RTS series. The developers of this mod are hoping to take the great gameplay and feel of Starcraft, and put it in a full three dimensional engine. Now, here is the kicker: other people have attempted this very same goal. However, Blizzard's lawyers were quick on their heels and the cease-and-desist orders were delivered promptly. In that case, the modification was for an EA game called Command and Conquer: Generals. The case has been made that since Project Revolution is being made for a Blizzard game (that people would still have to purchase in order to play the mod), the company will be less likely to shut it down. According to the article in PC Gamer, Blizzard has yet to comment on this developing mod. For those of us still hoping for that glorious day when Starcraft 2 is announced, this is good news.
