Save money and oil, ride a horse

The Pitt News, University of Pittsburgh, PA

4 hours ago by Joshua Green

I'm worried, people. Gas is at $4 a gallon. Our government is acting like Daniel Day-Lewis when it comes to oil. We need a solution, and we need it quickly. We're the United States, for crying out loud! How dare we pay the same price for oil that other countries have been paying for years? When will some brave, courageous and uncomfortably attractive individual come along with the answer?

That time is now.

The Pitt News, University of Pittsburgh, PA

Pennsylvania Auditor General Jack Wagner is pushing the state to consider a law that would require all convicted sex offenders in Pennsylvania to wear GPS ankle bracelets so that their location can be monitored at all times for up to five years after they are released from prison.

Bats driving me batty

KentNewsNet.com, Kent State University, OH

4 hours ago by Kristina Deckert

I'm pretty sure one flew into my head when I was sitting on the dock here in Chautauqua, N.Y., about a week ago. I also found one smashed on the ground of the newsroom where I work. I may have run it over with the wheel of my chair. When I left our front door open a few nights ago, one almost flew into our house.

Going greenish

KentNewsNet.com, Kent State University, OH

4 hours ago by Kristine Gill

Pretty much nothing about my life is "green." When I drive my mom's car, it's not running on grease and our house isn't solar-powered. Sometimes, when I can't find a recycling bin, I'll chuck my pop can in the garbage. But I appreciate the idea of going green.

And then there were five

It's time to form another search party. Actually, make that a search committee.

Gayle Ormiston, associate provost for faculty affairs, announced his plans last week to leave Kent State after receiving the provost position at Marshall University in Huntington, W.Va. His departure makes him the fifth person to leave the Kent State administration since November.

Institution of marriage evolves with society

The Triangle, Drexel University, PA

5 days ago by Thompson, Jamie

In his June 27 letter to the editor, Lux Gurusamy wrote: "Marriage is not just a religious symbol or social status or even a spiritual status. It is an identity. It is an identity that has been present ever since time began. … Our ancestors, who were relatively smarter than us, never fooled with that identity.

Staff Editorial: Searching for quiet

The Diamondback, University of Maryland College Park, MD

With the availability of community lounges already evaporating due to the campus housing crunch, the university seems poised to make a decision that would deprive students of a quiet place to study, a vitally important resource. Cutting the late-night study service - always popular among students cramming for exams, rushing through term papers or just looking for a quiet place to read - would leave students in the dorms with scant few areas to study and work after the sun goes down.

The world (not) according to Facebook

The Diamondback, University of Maryland College Park, MD

6 days ago by Joel Cohen

I lost access to my Facebook account for five days recently, and I thought it might be the end of the world. What would I do after checking my Gmail account? I was at a loss. But an amazing thing happened: absolutely nothing. People still pick up The Diamondback solely for the Sudoku and crossword puzzles, the McDonald's in the Stamp Student Union still serves Pepsi, and our basketball team is still, well, our basketball team.

Boycotting the U. of Perelman

To the Editor:

The renaming of Logan Hall to Claudia Cohen Hall is really an outrage because it was done without forethought. Perelman donates his money and expects something named after him or a member of his family.

Why not rename the school as University of Perelman instead? Because that is where it's headed with Perelman's money.

Until we can proudly show university donors the decor in Debartolo Hall, purchasing new land is not an absolutely defensible move.

Julia Harte | Vertigo in the ivory tower

The Daily Pennsylvanian, University of Pennsylvania, PA

Elite universities don't cut off students from the rest of society - Ivy-goers must do that themselves.
